Intended Use

Koraput Kalajeera Rice is best suited for daily meals, festive dishes, temple offerings, and traditional preparations, where its natural aroma and delicate texture can be fully appreciated.

Cooking Instructions

  1. Rinse Kalajeera rice gently 2–3 times.
  2. Soak the rice for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Add water in the ratio of 1 cup rice: 2 cups water.
  4. Cook covered on low heat for 10–12 minutes, or until the water is fully absorbed.
  5. Rest for 5 minutes, then fluff gently with a fork before serving to retain aroma and texture.

This initiative is supported by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Government of Odisha, and the Department of Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, and implemented by the International Rice Research Institute, empowers women through entrepreneurship development. The product has obtained the prestigious GI Tag Certificate for Koraput Kalajeera rice. Highly aromatic and low in GI heritage premium rice have helped tribal farmers improve their incomes while contributing to better health and nutrition. Through its cultivation and value addition, farmers are able to support their families while contributing to their communities.

Jaivik Sri Farmers Producer Company (FPC) was established in the Koraput region of South Odisha to empower small and marginal tribal farmers, who practise traditional natural farming. Jaivik Sri FPC has a strong base of 1,268 tribal farmer members. They have obtained the prestigious GI Tag Certificate for Koraput Kalajeera Rice. This recognition reaffirms the dedication of the tribal farmers of this region in preserving the unique heritage & biodiversity of this tribal region.
